A study evaluated the capacity of a Mediterranean-type diet to maintain an adequate vitamin E status in 83 children living in a non-industrialized area in southern Italy. Vitamin E intake was estimated at about 4.5 mg/day, compared to a theoretical requirement (estimated from polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) intakes) of 4.6 mg/day. The mean vitamin E serum level was 1.02 mg/dl, a level similar to or higher than reported by other workers. The results indicate that this type of diet, characterized by a relatively low PUFA content and PUFA/saturated fatty acid ratio, provides an adequate vitamin E status for these children. (wz)
