The general situation of the contribution of cardiovascular diseases (CD) to the overall mortality incidence in recent years in Latin American and Caribbean countries is reviewed, and measures for improving the epidemiological understanding of the CD problem by these countries are suggested. The data indicates that, while the general mortality trend moved downward in the 1970s, the trend of specific mortality from certain cardiovascular diseases moved upward. (wz)
