1996
Mancl, K.M. | Veenhuizen, M.A. | Watson, M.
A three-year educational program on waste management was conducted for county extension agents. The topics included: 1) land application of waste; 2) waste treatment; and 3) waste storage and handling. The primary objectives were to increase the knowledge and understanding of waste management principles among county agents and to increase agent-led instruction of livestock producers and landowners. Classroom lectures and demonstrations were supplemented by field demonstrations of sample collection and equipment calibration. Eighteen waste management topics were presented during the educational program. Ninety percent of the agents demonstrated substantial previous knowledge in two topics, and an increase in understanding by at least 25% of the agents was achieved in 13 topics. Overall, over 90% of the agents showed an understanding in 12 of the 18 topics following the program. Participation in the in-service program resulted in increased knowledge of waste management principles, increased agent instruction of producers and landowners, and greater utilization of available teaching materials.
