Effects of Se-enrichment on plant growth and fruit quality of strawberry

The uptake of Se by plants differs considering the inorganic or organic species in which Se can be found. Selenate (Se(VI)) is more soluble than selenite (Se(IV)) and it is more easily absorbed by plant roots. An experiment was carried out in Huelva University, Spain. The experiment had a duration of seven months. 100 strawberry plants (Fragaria × ananassa Duch. 'Splendor') were cultivated in a soilless growing system, using polyethylene bags (100×18×30 cm) filled with coir fibre as substrate under natural light and temperature. A completely randomized block design (5 treatments × 2 replications) was used. Each replicate consisted of 10 plants. There were five test samples: 1) control (non-treated); 2) Se(IV) in substrate; 3) Se(IV) foliar (sprayed on leaves); 4) Se(VI) in substrate; 5) Se(VI) foliar. We have analysed the content of chlorophyll, the number of leaves, crown diameter, weight, firmness, pH, °Brix and titratable acidity. The aim of our study was to evaluate quantitatively the influence of foliar and substrate application of Se(IV) and Se(VI) on fruit quality of strawberry plants in a soilless growing system. The results show no statistically significant differences in average fruit weight and firmness among treatments and control. Treatments differed significantly in the content of chlorophyll and crown diameter: Se(IV) foliar had the highest values. Se(IV) in substrate had the highest number of leaves followed by Se (IV) foliar. Total soluble solid content and titratable acidity of fruits differed among the treatments, Se(VI) in the substrate having the highest total soluble solid content.
