Development of semi-forced culture of Japanese pear 'Kousui' making use of the climatic conditions in Fukui, Japan

The cropping pattern of the Japanese pear 'Kousui' (Pyrus Pyrifolia Nakai), a leading variety in Japan, under semi-forced culture was simulated adopting the developmental rate (DVR) method model. As well the fuel cost for heating was calculated as a heating degree hour (DH; cumulative temperature difference per hour between the inside and outside of the greenhouse). Moreover it was investigated how the amount and the kinds of accumulated sugar in fruit at maturity are influenced by the quantity of solar radiation. In accordance with these results, a new semi-forced culture was proposed. In the new system, heating begins in late January, and bloom and harvesting are advanced to mid-February and early June, respectively. The new semi-forced culture makes the best use of climatic conditions in Fukui which are cold temperatures in winter and high solar radiation in the pre-rainy season. In addition, fuel expenses are saved in this cropping system, compared with conventional semi-forced culture. As a result of trials, it was confirmed that we could control the development of 'Kousui' accurately and harvest fruit with high sugar content. In conclusion, the new cropping system is the most advantageous and suitable in Fukui area. At present, it is the earliest season production of economical and marketable 'Kousui' fruit under semi-forced culture in Japan.
