Elevated serum iron concentration in adolescent alcohol users
1988
Friedman, I.M. | Kraemer, H.C. | Mendoza, F.S. | Hammer, L.D.
A study assessed whether alcohol induced elevated serum iron (Fe) levels and transferrin saturation in 1205 adolescents (614 girls, 591 boys; ages 16-19) who participated in subjects who participated in the 1971-73 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HANES), and assessed the effect of oral contraceptive use with these effects in the study subjects. Alcohol use was associated with increased serum Fe levels in both sexes, with total Fe-binding capacity, transferrin saturation, and hemoglobin levels in boys, and with increased serum Fe levels in nonusers of oral contraceptives. The implications of these findings are discussed.(wz)
