Characterization of macro and micro nutrient deficiency symptoms in asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.)
2018
Feller, C. | Müller, A.
In a two-year pot experiment we induced deficiency symptoms of potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, sulphur, boron, manganese or zinc. The plants were cultivated in quartz sand and supplied with a nutrient solution with one of the mentioned nutrients being absent. The resulting deficiency symptoms were described and illustrated showing a high variability of symptoms such as chloroses, necrosis, growth inhibition and deformations. Under calcium deficient conditions, for example, the male variety 'Cumulus' clearly formed fruits and seeds despite the fact that young, emerging shoots died off. At the end of the experiment the fresh weight of roots, the nutrient content of the fern and the content of carbohydrates in the roots were recorded to confirm the achievement of nutrient deficiency as intended.
