French prune tree growth and yield comparisons of marianna 2624, myrobalan seedling and 29C rootstocks planted on a heavy, poorly-drain California soil

French prunes (P. domestica L., syn. 'petite d'Agen) growing on marianna 2624 (P. cerasifera X P. munsonianna) (M2624), myrobalan (P. cerasifera) seedling (MS), and myrobalan, 29C (M29C) rootstocks were planted in 1981 on a heavy, poorly-drained soil in Butte County, California. Tree growth, yield, fruit hydration ratio, fruit size, and rootstock suckering were evaluated. Seasonal differences in trunk cross sectional area (TCSA) were observed but after seven years of growth, trees were the same size on all rootstocks. Trees on MS rootstock had the heaviest production during the first 2 years of cropping. Trees on M2624 had significantly more rootstock suckers than did trees on either MS or M29C rootstocks. After seven years of evaluation, no differences in fruit size, hydration ratio or yield per tree were noted in response to rootstock.
