Effect of different hormone treatments on rooting of Olea europaea cv. Galega vulgar cuttings

The aim of the present investigation was to determine whether treatments with different hormones in different formulations, i.e. indol butyric acid (IBA) in liquid suspension, indol butyric acid (commercially denoted as Seradix) in powder, and naftil acetic acid (NAA, commercially denoted as Rhizopon B) in powder, could improve the rooting percentage of cuttings of cv Galega vulgar clones. The experimental design was a completely randomised block with 4 replicates of 10 cuttings of each clone per plot, involving a total of 120 cuttings (40 cuttings per each of the 3 different treatments). Hormones tested to determine their influence on rooting capacity of six clones of cv Galega vulgar were indol butyric acid (IBA) at 5000 ppm in 30% ethanol, and powder formulations of both indol butyric acid 0,8% (Seradix) and naftil acetic acid at 0,2% (Rhizopon B). At the end of the experiment, i.e. 75 days after keeping cuttings under mist, the percentage of cuttings with callus, of rooted cuttings and non rooted cuttings was recorded. The highest level of rooting (45%) was obtained for clone 19, treated with Rhizopon B and for clone 23 treated also with Rhizopon B (42,5%). In general, treatment with 5 000 ppm IBA in liquid form was clearly less effective, as compared to other hormone formulations.
