Guard cell responses were examined in green and senescing leaves of Victa faba using detached epidermal strips to eliminate influences from the mesophyll. Stomatal opening was greater in epidermal strips from mature leaves than from senescing leaves although the latter still retained the ability to respond to CO2 and to kinetin. It was concluded that the decline in stomatal activity during senescence is an independent but parallel process to changes occurring in the mesophyll.
