A Comparison of the Pedigree and Bulk Methods of Breeding Soybeans

SynopsisNo significant differences in plant height, lodging index, bacterial blight reaction, oil and protein content of the seed and iodine number of the oil were found between the mean response of soybean lines developed by the pedigree and bulk methods. With two exceptions, in which the bulk lines showed superiority, mean seed yields also were similar for the two methods of breeding. The mean maturity of lines were similar for the two methods of breeding with the exception of the early group in which the bulk lines were four days later.
