This paper reports the results of a 3-year experimental program designed to develop an inexpensive, low-technology approach for conducting atmospheric CO2 enrichment and depletion studies of aquatic and terrestrial plants. It begins by demonstrating the effectiveness of a number of simple techniques for creating a wide range of sub- and supra-ambient atmospheric CO2 concentrations in a set of low-cost experimental enclosures. It then describes the utilization of this approach in a variety of experiments that lead to the derivation of CO2-growth response relationships for a common terrestrial plant and for both a submerged and a floating aquatic species. Finally, it provides a description of a simple procedure for obtaining accurate assessments of atmospheric CO2 concentrations in such experiments.
