Effect of kelthane on pH dependency of lipases in tissues of the penaeid prawn, Metapenaeus monoceros (Fabricius) under sublethal exposure

The pH-dependent lipase activity showed three peaks, an acidic (pH 4.0 to 4.5), a neutral (pH 7.0), and an alkaline (basic) (pH 8.0 to 8.5), in midgut gland and muscle tissues of the control and kelthane exposed prawn. In control prawns neutral lipase activity is high, white in kelthane-exposed prawns the acidic lipase activity is high in acute and chronic exposures. An increase in the three lipase activities were observed in kelthane exposure. The decrement in glycogen and total lipids and an increment in free fatty acids and glycerol were observed during kelthane exposure. The accumulation of kelthane residues were recorded in midgut gland of chronic exposed prawns. The results confirm prevalence of toxic stress. Some intracellular changes due to kelthane accumulation should be responsible for the activation of lipases.
