Teen-age pregnancy
1979
Adolescent pregnancy is a crisis affecting the present and the future. Several medical risks exist: higher death rate, toxemia, or premature or prolonged labor in young mothers; and immature organ systems, mental retardations, or congenital malformation in infants. Mother and child also suffer on social and economic levels. Lack of schooling and job skills may necessitate dependence on welfare. Attempted suicide and child abuse are high in this age group. Some questions concerning fetal growth and development and suggestions for lesson plans about teenage pregnancy are featured. The importance of nutrition during pregnancy is stressed.
