Calcium intake in women attending menopause clinics: Considerations with regard to currently recommended dietary allowances
1984
Hailes, J. | Nelson, J. | Burger, H.G.
The average daily intake of calcium of women attending a menopausal clinic was calculated from data obtained by recall. Only 28% of the patients took more than 800 mg of calcium daily. Of the remaining subjects all but 1 had a dietary intake of 400 to 800 mg daily, an amount within the recommended daily allowance of Australian standards. In view of the number of western women in this age group that have experienced fractures, it is suggested that the current recommendations for calcium are too low. Post-menopausal women should be advised to increase their daily calcium intake or to take calcium supplements. (emc)
