Effects of light and bicarbonate on membrane potential in Potamogeton schweinfurthii (Benn)

Measurements have been made of photosynthesis by submerged leaves of the aquatic angiosperm, Potamogeton schweinfurthii, and of membrane potential differences between the interior of leaf cells and various media. Bicarbonate may be absorbed and used for photosynthesis with concomitant export of hydroxyl ions however much molecular carbon dioxide is also present and being absorbed. The green cells are temporarily depolarized upon illumination and hyperpolarized on darkening. These potential changes are associated with absence and presence of bicarbonate and are tentatively interpreted in terms of active transport mechanisms for bicarbonate and hydroxyl ions.
