Reproductive history and body mass index in black and white women

A study compared the number of births, birth spacing, and demographic variables in 844 white and 289 black women to their body mass index (BMI). The number of births, maternal age at last birth and the time between first and last birth correlated positively with BMI. However, for black women, the reproductive variables did not correlate with BMI when age, education level, and income level were included in the regression equation; for white women, only number of births correlated with BMI when the same regression included number of births, maternal age at last birth, and the time between first and last birth. The possible implications of these results are discussed.(wz)
