Unfavorable serum lipid profiles in extremely overfat women
1983
Weltman, Arthur
The effects of extremes in over-fatness on serum lipid levels were evaluated in a sedentary group of 48 overfat women (mean age, 42.6; body fat content, 40% or more) and in 21 normal (control) women (mean age, 40.1; body fat content, 35% or less). The overly fat women had significantly higher mean total serum cholesterol (208.3 mg/dl, vs. 189.3 mg/dl for the normal control group), mean total serum triglycerides (134.0 vs. 75.4 mg/dl), low-density-lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDLC) (124.2 vs. 107.2 mg/dl), and an increased total cholesterol/high-density-lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDLC) ratio (3.76 vs. 2.87) and LDL/HDLC ratio (2.17 vs. 1.60). The overfat women also had significantly lower HDLC levels (57.3 vs. 67.0 mg/dl). These results indicate that overfat women have less favorable serum lipid profiles than normal women relative to coronary artery disease risk. (wz)
