Managing hyperlipidaemias
1982
Buckley, Brendan M. | Bold, Alan M.
Patient treatment for hyperlipidemia (a biochemical diagnosis based on elevated fasting plasma concentrations of cholesterol or tryglyceride or both) must be taylored to each patient. Underlying primary disease such as diabetes mellitus and hypothyroidism must be considered. While methods of treatment are controversial, active treatment is essential. Today the most common methods include diet and drug therapy which must work together. A number of drugs (e.g., clofibrate, nicotinic acid, D-thyroxine) are used to manage patients with hyperlilpidemias, but most have been criticized because of doubts about their clinical benefits and their improved or anecdotal side effects.
