A Nonweighing Lysimeter Design for Field Studies Using Nitrogen-15
1986
Reeder, J. D.
This paper describes the design and use of a nonweighing lysimeter in a field study in which ¹⁵N cycling was monitored within a revegetated disturbed-land ecosystem over a period of 5 yr. The design successfully overcame sampling problems associated with a rocky terrain. Recovery of added ¹⁵N was satisfactory, with <10% of added ¹⁵N unaccounted for two seasons after application. However, the water content of the natural spoil profile could not be exactly duplicated in the lysimeter. Although the lysimeter was designed to minimize sampling problems associated with a specific research site, the design is applicable to other field conditions in which leaching losses need to be monitored.
