Alcohol-related problems: WHO's programme to be strengthened

Some of the many problems related to alcoholism include crime; accidents, especially those related to traffic; absenteeism; low productivity; and various medical conditions including heart disease, cirrhosis, pancreatitis, lowered resistance to infection, suicide, and retarded development of unborn children of alcoholic women. World alcohol consumption is increasing disproportionately; the medical, social and psychiatric costs are a heavy burden on many countries, especially developing nations. International response to the problem of alcoholism could include regional resource centers, intercountry training programs, and specialized training for health professionals. WHO has several programs aimed at extended collaboration on developing national programs on alcoholism; among them are a "community response to alcohol-related problems" and a series of "country profiles" concerning alcoholism problems and solutions.
