1982

Serum copper (Cu) and ceruloplasmin (Cp) are described and compared in preterm infants (30.0 weeks mean gestational age). Preterm infants had significantly higher serum Cu levels than full term infants with similar postconceptional age. Low serum Cu levels were associated with parenteral nutrition deficient in Cu, twin pregnancies, and increased growth rates. A precocious rise in serum Cu and Cp concentration, compared to fetal life, is associated with extrauterine life. Long term studies (from birth) are needed to determine laboratory criteria of Cu deficiency. (kbc)
