Natural outbreaks of infectious bursal disease (IBD) in Vanaraja birds of Meghalaya

Infectious bursal disease is one of the dreaded emerging viral diseases in young chicks of 3–6 weeks of age with high morbidity and low mortality. It causes severe immunosuppression, resulting in vaccination failure and increased susceptibility to several other infectious and non-infectious diseases. Outbreaks of Infectious bursal disease in broiler birds have been reported earlier from different parts of the country by several workers.1,2,3 But the reports regarding the outbreak of the disease in dual-purpose chicken varieties like Vanaraja are very rare. The present communication deals with studies on two outbreaks of Infectious bursal disease in Vanaraja birds, which were newly introduced in Meghalaya under National Agricultural Technology Project (NATP) on Backyard Poultry Production. Two out breaks of Infectious bursal disease were recorded in Vanaraja chicks maintained in intensive system of rearing at Poultry farm of ICAR Research complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya. The mortality percentages of the two outbreaks recorded were 5.0 & 4.4 respectively. The birds were vaccinated with live IBD vaccine (Live I.B.D. Vaccine- Intermediate standard strain) on 14th and 35th day of age through drinking water. In both the outbreaks, chicks of 6–8 weeks old were affected.
