Lay summary:Many animals change their vocal behaviour because of man-made noise, but the potential costs of doing so are rarely considered. Noise-induced alterations could result in vocalisations that are heard over shorter ranges, are more likely to be detected by predators, require more energy to produce or convey less information. We argue that such costs must be considered alongside the proposed benefits if we are to gain a full understanding of this global pollutant.
