A brief technical review attempts to: (1) classify the most important aspects of the metabolic behavior and interactions of trace elements into a few categories to identify several principles believed to govern trace element metabolism; and (2) summarize the effects of trace elements on metabolism in humans. Related topics include: trace element absorption and intermediary metabolism; and homeostasis as applied to trace element nutrition and the nutritional implications of homeostasis. A commentary of this review is appended.(wz)
