Enhanced Zn(II) ion adsorption on surface modified mixed biomass – Borassus flabellifer and Aspergillus tamarii: Equilibrium, kinetics and thermodynamics study

The present study was focused on synthesis of mixed biosorbent using agricultural waste (Borassus flabellifer male inflorescence) and fungal biomass (Aspergillus tamarii) to study the Zn(II) ion adsorption. The synthesized agriculture waste biomass was chemically modified to enhance the Zn(II) ion removal process. Two mixed biosorbents such as RBFM – Aspergillus tamarii and SMBFM – Aspergillus tamarii were prepared and characterised by FTIR, SEM and EDX analysis. Higher removal of zinc was attained at 25 mg/L of zinc concentration, 40 min of contact time, 6.0 pH, 2.5 g/L of biomass dose and 30 °C. Adsorption experiments were signifying that Langmuir isotherm and Pseudo-first order are the best fitted model, and the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity (qₘ) were evaluated as 49.79 mg/g and 54.74 mg/g for RBFM – Aspergillus tamarii and SMBFM – Aspergillus tamarii respectively. The negative values of Gibbs free energy (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°) and entropy (ΔS°) showed that present study was exothermic, spontaneous and favourable at low temperatures.
