Haloadaptation of the green alga Botryococcus braunii (race A)

The biomass yield and cell composition of Botryococcus braunii (race-A) is affected when the organism is grown at different NaCl concentrations. Increasing salinity induces a decrease in protein content, but the carbohydrate and lipid contents remain unchanged. Interestingly, in the lipid fraction the amount of hydrocarbon, acylglycerol and phosphorus is maintained, while the galactose content and unsaturation level are modified. The most important effect of saline stress in this alga is the proportional increase of the alpha-laminaribiose (O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 leads to 3)-alpha-D-glucopyranose) content, which appears as the main osmoprotectant compound. This is the first report of laminaribiose as an organic osmoprotectant compound in saline stress of microalgae.
