Breast-feeding, weight loss, and jaundice

Weight loss experienced by fully breast-fed infants was examined relative to infant jaundice and fever incidence in 100 hospital nursery infants (assigned 25 each to 1 of 4 weight groups). The results provided birth weight losses to be expected in fully breast-fed infants of different birth weights during the first 3 days of life. The average weight loss for all groups was 5.8%. A weight loss greater than 12% was considered excessive. Infants who subsequently became febrile did not have excessive weight loss, and hence, could not have been identified earlier as infants likely to develop "breast milk fever." Further, no relationship could be found between infant serum bilirubin levels and infant weight loss. (wz)
