Eye content of screening pigments and visual function of some mutants of musca domestica

The influence of the contents of ocular screening pigments on visual function has been examined here in some mutants of Musca domestica L. The electroretinogram (ERG), evoked in specific stimulating conditions (by diffused or directional light), was chosen as the analytical method. This experimental technique permits evaluation of the discriminating properties of the compound eye and thus it has been possible to conclude that such properties are considerably reduced in mutants with a small content of screening pigments in their eyes.
