Food allergies and migraine | Food allergies and migraine. [letter]

Although headache patterns improved after elimination of certain foods, the use of cardiovascular responses to food challenges without demonstrating specific antibodies or sensitized cells directed against the target food antigens is not convincing evidence of an allergic reaction and consequently, a correlation between food allergies and migraines. With food challenges not done double blind, the anxiety of receiving harmful food can activate a migraine. Heart rate and blood pressure increases after food challenges may also result from anxiety. Although a patient has fewer migraines when avoiding certain foods, the elimination of vasoactive chemicals rather than allergens may be the reason.
