Food allergy in migraine

The effects of specific food allergies on migraine headaches are being assessed in a 2-phase study, as well as the value of testing for specific IgE to foods by radioallergosorbent tests (RAST). Patients of a neurological clinic participated in rotation and elimination diets for 2 years; the majority (70%) had positive RAST and good response to exclusion diets, usually complete relief in two weeks. Comparison of IgE antibodies of the attending foods to those shown by RAST confirmed the predictive value of the assay. It was found that oral sodium chromoglycate protected patients from food challenges. Patients were allergic to more than one food, usually 3. Foods tested included cereal, milk, eggs, fish, tea, and tomato.
