Leishmania infantum, experimentally infected black rats displayed general resistance to infection even though it appeared that very low number of amastigotes persisted in animal for long period, Phlebotomus perniciosus and P. perfiliewi induced to feed on rats became infected, same two sandflies were readily attracted to and fed on black rats in nature, findings strongly suggest that black rat may be one of wild reservoirs of visceral leishmaniasis in Tuscany
