Nitrate reductase (NR) activity and in vivo nitrate reduction were examined in ‘Chinese Spring’ wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and the ditelosomic and nullisomic-tetrasomic lines to determine the chromosomal location of genes controlling these metabolic processes. Genes controlling increased NR activity were located on the long arms of chromosomes 1B, 5A, and 5D and the short arms of chromosomes 6A, 6B, and 6D. Genes controlling decreased NR activity were not detected. Based on in vivo nitrate reduction assays, genes for increased nitrate reduction were located on chromosomes 5A and 5D. Genes on the long arms of chromosomes 3A and 3D decreased nitrate reduction even though they did not decrease NR activity. Apparently, several genes control nitrate reduction in hexaploid wheat.
