Historical and recent findings concerning the confirmed association between excess dietary cholesterol and increased coronary heart disease are described. Data on the cholesterol content of common foods, the increase in serum cholesterol levels in white males and females with age, and the risk increases for heart disease with increasing age and serum cholesterol level are presented and discussed. Attention also is given to the role of polyunsaturated fatty acids, lopoprotein profiles, and lipoprotein-cholesterol ratios. Epidemiological findings related to population groups and dietary practices are reported. A set of 13 dietary recommendations for reducing harmful cholesterol levels is appended.(wz)
