Principles of nutrition and dietary recommendations for individuals with diabetes mellitus: 1979
1979
The essential nutrient needs of all people are the same whether or not they are diabetic. For patients with insulin treated diabetes or those treated with oral glucose lowering agents, special precautions regarding kinds, amounts, distribution, and timing of food are required. Some liberalization in carbohydrate intake is recommended also, preferably as complex carbohydrates with high fiber content. The increased amount of carbohydrates serves as a replacement for some fats. However, sugar intake should be limited. All insulin diet and exercise regimens should be flexible and designed to take the needs of the individual into consideration. Therapy for the obese, non-insulin-dependent diabetic is based primarily on weight control.
