Azospirillum-plant interaction: a biochemical approach

The composition of Azospirillum lipoferum Col 5 and Azospirillum brasilense Cd polysaccharides which surround the cell (capsular-polysaccharides, CPS) and the composition of polysaccharides loosely bound to the bacteria or released into the culture-medium exo-polysaccharides, EPS) has been analysed--after hydrolysation--by HPLC and by chemical analyses. Both fraction (CPS and EPS) are qualitatively similar in both bacteria, and are composed mainly by three sugars and by two organic acids. Relative amount of each monosaccharide unit, instead, varies independently among the two strains and during the culture growth. A. lipoferum Col5 CPS-fraction shows a peculiar pattern on glucose amount, which increases during the culture gowth, more than other sugars. This monosaccharide independent pattern suggests that more than one polysaccharide is present in Azospirillum-strains tested.
