Diet and acne
1981
Michaelsson, Gerd
The factors which influence the eruption and severity of acne are more likely associated with the androgen activity during puberty than with diet or psychology; opinions are available to support every point of view, though hard facts are few and definitive studies non-existent. Clinical investigations tend to link acne and some foods, such as chocolate and other sweets, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, fatty foods and iodine. Zinc deficiency seems to aggravate the condition in acne-prone patients; polyunsaturated fat in the diet has been seen to improve the condition. The link between vitamin A and acne is not clear, but levels of retinol-binding protein are low in adolescents with severe acne.
