Becker takes charge with aggressive plan
1986
Dando, K.
Teamwork is the backbone of the "Steps to the Future" program being advocated by Thelma Becker during her coming year as president of the American School Food Service Association (ASFSA). The program calls for concentrated efforts in five areas within ASFSA: program excellence, professional development, marketing, organizational development, and public policy and legislation. Two major program priorities include strong marketing efforts for child nutrition programs, and a program to strenghten ties with legislators to protect child nutrition programs from proposed budget cuts. Before her election as ASFSA president-elect, Becker has occupied a number of positions with ASFSA and received numerous commendations and awards. As director of the Souderton Area School District in Pennsylvania for almost 20 years, Becker has repeatedly been recognized for her superior job performance and professional attitude. Her school lunch program has been recognized nationwide for its high quality, innovative use of available food, sound fiscal management, and excellent student participation (90%). Two dominant trends that Becker predicts will have increasing impact on school food service operations during the next few years are nutrition education and training, and growth in computer usage and foodservice applications.(aje)
