A case study describes toxicological and physiological biopsy and autopsy findings of a 5-day-old female infant with fatal hepatic vaso-occlusive disease who died on the 38th day of life. It is suggested that the toxicity and mortality of the infant were due to pyrrolizidine alkaloids present in a herbal medicine purchased by the mother at a pharmacy and consumed daily during her entire pregnancy, and possibly to the occasional consumption of cannabis and hallucinogenic mushrooms by the mother some months before actual pregnancy.
