A field trial was carried out at the Fruit Research Station, Pahnoo, Shopian during 2006 where we compared nine treatments: T1 (atrazine at 4 kg ha-1), T2 (diuron 4 kg ha-1), T3 (dalapon 5 kg ha-1), T4 (glyphosate 2½ L ha-1), T5 (punched black polyethylene), T6 (unpunched black polyethylene), T7 (dry Dal weed), T8 (mechanical weeding) and T9 (untreated control). Mulching with unpunched black polyethylene resulted in lower weed populations and gave maximum per cent weed control. Significant effects were observed on the growth of nursery plants. Maximum height increase (43.5 cm), girth increase (0.75 cm), number of feathers (4.36) and length of feathers (27.95 cm) were recorded under unpunched black polyethylene, followed by punched black polyethylene and diuron. Maximum length of primary roots (19.87 cm) and length of secondary roots (13.46 cm), number of primary roots (23.52) and number of secondary roots (9.74) was also recorded in unpunched black polyethylene.
