Effect of selective breeding on growth and reproductive performance of Nandanam chicken 4 (synthetic strain) in different generation

A progress on the improvement of Nandanam chicken 4 (synthetic strain) with respect to body weight and production performance through selective breeding over 8 generations have been studied. The average day old chick weight, 8, 12, 20 and 40 week body weight of all 8 generation were 35.67, 429.05, 885.04, 1546.33 and 1848.31 g, respectively. The mean livability recorded up to 20 weeks and 20 to 40 weeks of age was 93.75 and 93.80%, respectively. Mean age at sexual maturity was 157.25 days and it ranged from 151 to 166 days. The part-period (20- 40 weeks) hen day and hen housed egg production has improved from 50.70 to 66.02% and; 47.80 to 64.80% from first to eight generation, respectively. The full period hen-housed egg production was improved from 45.25 to 52.23% and the annual number was 190 eggs with average egg weight of 60.81 g. Per cent fertility, hatchability on total egg set and fertile egg set showed no significant difference among the generations. The qualitative traits namely plumage and egg colour showed no significant difference among the generations and it is stable. The present study establishes that Nandanam chicken 4 had better body weight and egg production continuously for 8 generations without affecting other production and reproduction traits and the Nandanam chicken 4 strain could be suitable for backyard farming in rural areas of the country.
