A survey of hospital food service directors, associate and assistant directors, and administrators was designed to assess job satisfaction and identify sources of dissatisfaction. Using the Job Dimensions Blank (JDB), 227 males and 260 females were asked to rate 62 aspects of their jobs, and results were tallied with these variables: sex, position, institution, management experience, hours of work, salary, educational level, age, marital status and state. The survey indicated that both males and females experienced a high degree of satisfaction and their scores fell about midpoint in a ranking of JDB scores of professionals in other disciplines. Factors important to job satisfaction included awareness of work results, use of professional skills, and degree of autonomy. Dissatisfaction was expressed regarding opportunities for community interaction, limitations on leisure, study and travel time, retirement prospects, recognition, earnings, and promotions. Those with longer tenure tended to be more satisfied. Three variables had significant effects on job satisfaction: age, size of hospital and professional qualifications.
