A Classification of dysgeusia
1983
Markley, Elizabeth J. | Mattes-Kulig, Debra A. | Henkin, Robert I.
A classification of dysgeusia (distorted taste sensation), based on the number and kind of food and beverage distortions perceived, is presented. A relationship between the classification and patient's weight was demonstrated; as dysgeusia severity increased, weight loss increased. Type of dysgeusia was independent of the diagnosis that precipitated medical treatment. Of the 65 patients that were followed over a period of time, 59% exhibited no change in the dysgeusia; the condition had existed for an average of 2.8 years. Where changes were exhibited, the disorder was of shorter duration (1.4 years). No patient reported an improvement in the condition. (emc)
