Modeling an ear-corn dryer

The drying of ear corn was modeled and investigated experimentally at a commercial seed-processing facility. Twenty-four experiments were carried out from September to October 2001. The initial moisture content varied from 26% to 38% (w.b.) and the final moisture content from 12% to 14% (w.b.). The drying process was simulated via a modified version of the MSU in-bin drying model. Bed depth change was modeled as a function of moisture content and drying time (R2 = 67%). The standard error of prediction for transient, local moisture content was 2.8% to 3.5% (w.b.) and for total drying time was 9 h. The model was used to assess the effect of the main operating parameters on the dryer capacity and energy cost. Wet bulb temperature has the largest effect on the drying capacity and the cost of drying.
