Chemical and nutritional evaluation of flamboyant beans (Delonix regia)
1989
Marfo, E.K. | Oke, O.L. | Afolabi, O.A.
The seeds of Delonix regia, flamboyant, was analysed for proximate composition, mineral content, amino acids, fatty acids and some toxicants. Of the various components of the seed, the cotyledon had the highest nutrients (Crude Protein 35.97 +/- 3.50, Fat 9.77 +/- 0.92, Ash 5.93 +/- 0.67%). The amino acid pattern revealed that the seed is a rich source of Asp, Ile, Leu, and Phe, but deficient in Met and Lys which is confirmed by the chemical scores; 85.7 and 80.0 respectively. Although protein intake was high and similar in all cases (10-14g) the cotyledon gave the highest PER of 1.47 (egg 2.58) and endosperm gave the lowest (0.40). The BV, NPU and TD followed the same trend. In general, it is rich in minerals. Phytate was highest in the cotyledon (2.43% dry weight) while tannin was highest in the hull (9.83 +/- 0.71%).
