The 3-methylhistidine content of human tissues

Levels of 3-methylhistidine (3-MeH), an indicator of actin and myosin breakdown, were measured in 88 samples of human tissue to determine its concentration in different muscles and non-muscular tissue, and to establish individual variability. Skeletal muscle was found to contain the highest concentration of 3-MeH; intermediate values were observed in cardiac muscle and smooth muscle tissues, and low levels occurred in kidney and liver. Individual variation in 3-MeH content of skeletal muscle was very small. No significant differences were found between 3-MeH concentrations of skeletal muscle from different body sites. These findings suggest that urinary 3-MeH excretion can be useful in estimating the rate of myofibrillar protein breakdown.
