Plum germplasm resources and breeding in Liaoning of China

Since 1978, when the economic reform from a planned economy system to a market economy system was first launched in the countryside of China, the plum germplasm resources research and utilization has undergone three developmental stages: (1) plum germplasm resource exploration and the establishment of the Chinese National Germplasm Repository for Plums; (2) the characterization and evaluation of the botanical and agronomic traits of the plum resources conserved in the National Repository; and (3) a genetic diversity analysis, based on molecular biological and palynological approaches; and cultivar improvement, integrated with marker assistance selection. The main progress of plum germplasm resources related work and the main achievements of plum breeding program in Liaoning are briefly reviewed, and the future research focus and breeding goals are discussed in accordance with the profile and present and future demand of the Chinese plum industry.
