On the in-situ aeration of landfills at laboratory and field scale – project “Heferlbach” | In-situ-Belüftung von Deponien in Feld und Labor – Projekt „Heferlbach“

The landfill Heferlbach in Mannswörth, Austria is presently under remediation by in-situ aeration. In addition to the remediation measure a research project is conducted, comprehending already completed lab-scale landfill reactor simulation experiments and a continuing evaluation and optimizing of the measure in the field.Under the applied laboratory conditions, the addition of water did not lead to an increase in carbon (C)-discharge, while strongly affecting the nitrogen balance. With the addition of water, denitrification, the emission of harmless N₂ could be pronounced, while in the “dry” application the formation of N₂O was intensified. The C‑discharge during the lab-scale aeration, mainly released through the gas-phase, was roughly twice as high as during the comparative anaerobic conditions. In the most favorable case (aerated+wet), 75 % of the total nitrogen remained in the solids at the end of the 2‑year experiment and 85–90 % in the other two cases (dry aerated and anaerobic).During the field-scale aeration approximately 1,280 Mg carbon could be removed by now. This corresponds roughly to 50 % of the laboratory-release in relation to the initial TOC-content. From the yearly taken solid samples in the field a slowly decreasing tendency in RI₄ (respiration index after four days) as well as in NH₄ after elution could be observed despite the heterogeneity of landfill material. Also, the formation of NO₃-N slightly increased, indicating oxygen availability. With the optimization of the field-scale operation during the research project, the energy demand could be reduced without showing an essential negative impact on the degradation process
