From the very beginning, the PNNS has a special agenda to evaluate the level of achievement of the objectives it has already defined. Surveillance structures have been set up, fit-for-purpose methodologies and evaluation studies have been organised to evaluate the objectives’achievement level and to determine the evolution of the nutritional status, the dietary habits, the food-linked lifestyles, the knowledge and perception of the French population regarding nutrition. At present, these elements are important tools to get precise information on the current nutritional situation in relation to the objectives of the PNNS, to track the evolution of knowledge and perception of the population from the time the PNNS was first set up, and to evaluate the procedures that were especially developed for communication purposes. Such data are collected by the national sanitary agencies (InVS, ANSES, and INPES) that are in charge of surveillance, expertise and communication and health education.
