Kushwaha, Saket | Kmalvanshi, V. | Lakra, Kerobim | Sen, C.
The paper has highlighted the role of agro-industry in making agriculture more lucrative and creating employment opportunities at both the production and marketing stages. The broad-based development of the agro-products industry will improve the social and physical infrastructure of India. Since it would cause diversification and commercialization of agriculture, it will enhance the income of farmers and create food surpluses. For devising a roadmap for livelihood security in eastern Uttar Pradesh, the paper has evolved a model which is structured around, (i) large-scale investment and adoption of the latest technologies, (ii) intensive marketing efforts, (iii) a foreign tie-up, if possible, and (iv) a brand name. The paper has categorized the total agro industry into three main groups: (i) village industries, (ii) small-scale industries and (iii) large industries. With an average Indian spending around 53 per cent income on food, the domestic market for processed foods is estimated to be worth $90 billion. The paper has envisaged that appropriate optimal policy adoption at the state level, delivery and implementation of all the enacted policies shall provide livelihood security.
